COMPATIBILITY
Confirmed applications include:
• VW New Beetle 9C1 / 1C1 – 1.6 Petrol
• Engine Code AYD – 1.6 75 kW / 102 PS
• Engine Code BFS – 1.6 75 kW / 102 PS
• Hatchback models
• Approximately 2000–2010 for the commonly listed UK application
NGK’s application catalogue lists the New Beetle 1.6 AYD and BFS from 08/2000 onward with one four-terminal U2003 ignition coil. (NGK Partfinder)
CONVERTIBLE / CABRIOLET
The same ignition-coil type is also listed for:
• VW New Beetle Convertible / Cabriolet
• 1.6 Petrol BFS
• Approximately 2003–2010
NGK specifically lists the Convertible 1.6 BFS from 04/2003 to 09/2010 with a single four-terminal ignition coil. (NGK Partfinder)
IMPORTANT EARLY 1.6 INFORMATION
Not every New Beetle sold as a 1.6 petrol uses exactly the same ignition arrangement.
Earlier vehicles can have different engine codes, including AWH, so compatibility should be determined from the engine code, original coil identification and electrical connector, rather than simply assuming every 1999–2010 1.6 uses this unit. BERU’s application data separately identifies AWH and AYD/BFS 1.6 engines. (Beru Parts)
For this reason, 2000–2010 AYD/BFS is the safer fitment description unless the exact OEM number on your coil confirms additional applications.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
This is a block-type ignition coil supplying high-voltage ignition output to all four cylinders through separate HT/spark-plug leads.
The ignition coil converts the vehicle’s low-voltage electrical supply into the high voltage required to produce a spark at the spark plugs.
The unit features:
• 4-pin electrical connector
• Four HT lead outputs
• Single coil-pack construction
• Electronic ignition operation
• No conventional distributor required
Aftermarket application catalogues also identify the AYD/BFS unit as a 4-pin block ignition coil with four outputs. (AUTODOC Ireland)
IGNITION SYSTEM INFORMATION
The coil pack works together with:
• Engine ECU
• Crankshaft/camshaft position information
• HT ignition leads
• Spark plugs
• Associated engine wiring
Correct ignition-coil operation is essential for reliable combustion across all four cylinders.
COMMON SYMPTOMS / REASONS FOR REPLACEMENT
• Engine misfire
• Rough or unstable idle
• Difficult starting
• Loss of engine power
• Hesitation under acceleration
• Engine-management warning light
• Misfire fault codes
• Intermittent ignition failure
• Cracked or damaged coil housing
• Corroded electrical terminals
• Failure when engine is hot or under load
IMPORTANT DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION
A misfire does not automatically mean the ignition coil is faulty.
Before replacement, check:
• Spark plugs
• HT ignition leads
• Coil electrical connector
• Engine wiring
• Relevant engine fault codes
• Fuel injector operation
• Compression where appropriate
Damaged HT leads or worn spark plugs can place additional stress on the ignition coil.
INSTALLATION
Disconnect the battery/ignition supply as appropriate before working on the ignition system.
Ensure all four HT leads are installed in their correct firing-order positions and that the electrical connector is securely locked into place.
Incorrect HT lead positioning can cause severe misfiring or prevent the engine from starting.
PROGRAMMING / CODING
No ECU programming or coding is normally required.
The correct replacement ignition coil should operate once correctly installed and connected.
IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY NOTE
Please compare the 4-pin connector, four HT outputs, mounting points and any manufacturer/OE number printed on your original coil before ordering.
For the New Beetle 1.6, engine code is particularly important.
Confirmed primary engine applications:
AYD – 1.6 Petrol 75 kW / 102 PS
BFS – 1.6 Petrol 75 kW / 102 PS
Do not purchase solely on the basis of “VW Beetle 1.6”, as different engine codes and ignition systems were used during production.
CONDITION
Genuine used ignition coil pack.
May have normal cosmetic marks and signs of previous installation.
Please check the listing photographs carefully for the exact connector, mounting arrangement and overall condition.
